Did anyone notice that Christmas is coming again. I’d almost forgotten until the local superstore reminded me … IN OCTOBER … WTF? It’s not like it hasn’t been before and is something new! (message to superstores …. it’s been going on for almost 2000 years … not like we haven’t noticed it coming EVERY year!)
What is Christmas to me other than a time for family to get together? It’s that time of year where the night life goes even more insane than usual. Office parties galore and plonkers drinking from mid-day until they can’t stand at 03.00 the next day.
At the moment it is freeeeezing at night (down to -4c last night) and still the fools go out in t-shirts. Girls with belts that they call skirts, skimpy tops and bare midriffs all complain “It’s cold. Turn up the heating.” Being an old sod with a coat on, I like to drive with the window open … they just love that!
To be honest, the fares from the office parties so far have all been good. I do the ones going home early (before 01.30) and leave the real drunks at 03.00 to the others if I can. (low tolerance threshold for drunks these days) Up till now I haven’t had a vomit-er yet … but I shouldn’t have said that … tempting fate! Tonight (Saturday) will probably be the worst before New Year’s Eve when the town does the biggest fancy dress ever. Everyone dresses up, some in the most unimaginable costumes … condoms, cigarette ends, beer cans, Christmas cards etc … very interesting to see and even better when an inflatable sumo wrestler tries to get into the cab with a six foot Christmas tree wife. Distinct lack of forward planning!
Several arrests last night as it was what we call ‘Builders Night’. All the local builders (construction workers) finish on the Friday before Christmas at noon, then go drinking and clubbing. Needless to say 12 to 15 hours drinking leaves them in a sorry state. I refused three of them as they were somewhat over the limit to remain human. I wonder if I could get a tractor and a farmyard trailer licensed??
The arrests were all through fighting as drunks do. Long gone are the days when drinking was just a social event with everyone enjoying themselves and going home happy. Maybe we should insist that brewers put Diazepam in the beer then everyone would relax and just not give a damn! Imagine all the drunks mellowed out … sheer bliss.
